Suspect in attack on Mamoon detainedBy Khwaja Basir Ahmad Jan 21, 2011 - 16:55
KABUL(PAN): Police have arrested a man accused of assaulting a senior Afghan journalist with acid in Kabul, an official said on Friday.
Currently in police custody, the suspect was being interrogated, the 101st Asmaee Kabul Zone police commander told Pajhwok Afghan News.
The detainee had confessed to throwing acid on Razaq Mamoon, director of the Bust-i-Bastan News Agency, during the interrogation, said Col. Muhammad Zahir.
Mamoon, who has also worked for the BBC, Radio Liberty and Tolo TV, was attacked Tuesday evening in the Macro Ryan neighbourhood of the capital, has accused Iran of being behind the attack.
His most recent book, Rad-i-Pai-Firaaon, (Footprint of Pharaoh), is mainly about the role of Iran in Afghanistan's civil war.
"It was clearly mentioned in the book how Iran wanted to divide Afghanistan…," Mamoon told Pajhwok in an exclusive interview from his hospital bed.
