Tajik among 8 fighters killed in TakharBy Wahidullah Jan 26, 2011 - 16:41
KUNDUZ CITY (PAN): Eight Taliban fighters, including a Tajik national, were killed by foreign troops during an operation in northern Takhar province, an official said on Wednesday.
The operation was conducted in the Qazaq village of Khwaja Ghar district on Tuesday night, administrative head of the town, Mullah Muhammad Omar, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Afghan National Army soldiers and police have also launched an offensive against the insurgents in the town. So far, he said, 10 villages had been cleared of militants, who fled without any resistance. The security forces were chasing the fleeing fighters, he added.
A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, denied the claim, saying that the fighters had been resisting foreign and local forces. Speaking over the telephone from an undisclosed location, Mujahid said that several foreign soldiers were killed during an overnight clash.
He also claimed the eight people killed in the NATO-led forces' operation were civilians.
