KABULinfo-icon(PANinfo-icon): The Ministry of Water and Energy on Saturday signed contracts with two private companies for extending transmission lines to two provinces in northern Afghanistaninfo-icon.

The contracts were singed between water and energy minister, Ismail Khan, and representatives of the companies -- Delight and New Energy Supply -- in Kabul.

German Development Bank will provide 8.2 million euros for the project, Ismail Khan told reporters after the signing ceremony.

He added electricity supply networks would be established in northern Kunduz and Badakhshan provinces. The networks would be connected with the Da Afghanistan Breshna Shirkat through the transmission lines.

He said the power network in Khanabad district of Kunduz would have the capacity of supplying 1.7 megawatts of electricity to 700 houses. The transmission line would take six months to connect the network with the Shirkat.

Another transmission line connecting power supply networks in Kasham district and Faizabad, capital of Badakhshan province, would be completed in eight months, the minister said. The project will benefit 3000 families in Kasham and 8,300 families in Faizabad.

Khan said a number of new power supply projects would be launched in Badakhshan and Kunduz with the financial assistance of Germany. The projects were estimated to cost 31.8 million euros, he added.
