Qanuni denies receiving offer of ministry
A day earlier, a lawmaker had said on the condition of anonymity that Karzai had promised Qanuni the post of foreign minister if he withdrew from the speaker's election.
His main rival, Abdur Rasul Sayyaf, was offered the position of chief justice, the source said, adding that the two had accepted the presidential proposal. Their appointments would be announced soon, the MP quoted Karzai as saying.
Speaking to Pajhwok Afghan News, Qanuni refuted the report. He said he had met the president four times since the Wolesi Jirga inauguration on Jan. 26, and that Karzai had never made such an offer.
Asked if he would accept a Cabinet slot, if offered, the ex-speaker replied: "Voters have elected me to represent them in the lower house, not to head a ministry."
Also on Monday, Karzai's spokesman, Wahid Omar, told journalists in Kabul that the president had not offered any ministries to the new parliamentarians.
