1 killed at Buzkashi match in Mazar
The incident happened late on Monday when gunmen opened fire at the end of the game, Balkh police spokesman, Sherjan Durani told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Buzkashi is a traditional Afghan sport in which horsemen must grab from the ground the carcass of a headless goat or calf and take it clear from the other players.
An initial investigation into the shooting found it to be the result of personal enmity, Durani said.
Sayed Nabiullah, who was injured in the shooting, said he did not know why the gunmen opened fire on him and his friend, Qari Sakhi, who was killed. He said they have no enmity with anyone.
Balkh head of Olympic committee, Mohammad Ibrahim Usmani, said the gunmen had come to the match on motorcycles and were not among the players. He said the victim did have horses and occasionally took part in games.
He also blamed the competitors for not alerting the committee that they were holding a game.
Official games take place only on Fridays, he said.
This is the second death in two months at a buzkashi game. Last month, a verbal dispute led to the murder of a young man during a game.
