UN assailed for interference in poll process
UNAMA criticised the Attorney General's Office for taking away ballot boxes from the Independent Election Commission's headquarters during a raid. The mission chief, Staffan de Mistura, said the move was a blow to the independence of the panel.
Nearly 300 disgruntled election losers staged a protest in front of the US embassy in Kabul, seeking an end to UNAMA's interference.
"It is an Afghan-led process. If Afghan security forces or prosecutors take away ballot boxes for investigation, it is the country's internal matter," said one of the protestors, Mueed Mrastyal.
Another losing candidate from southern Ghazni province, Daud Sultanzoi, said the UN mission was also meddling in the country's judicial affairs. He claimed that 50 percent of ballot boxes had been stuffed in northeastern Badakhshan province.
