3 dead, 25 injured in Spin Boldak bombing

3 dead, 25 injured in Spin Boldak bombing

Feb 24, 2011 - 12:06

KANDAHAR CITY (PANinfo-icon): An intelligence officer and two would-be attackers were killed and 25 people wounded during a suicide bombing in the main bazaar of a border town in southern Kandahar province on Thursday, officials said.

The injured included three National Directorate of Security (NDSinfo-icon) workers and 22 civilians, Governor Toryalai Weesa told a news conference in Kandahar City, the provincial capital.

The wounded people are in stable condition, according to the governor, who claimed the bomber had sneaked into Spin Boldak district from Pakistaninfo-icon. Suicide attacks in Afghanistaninfo-icon were planned in the neighbouring country, he alleged.

In Kabulinfo-icon, the intelligence service said that two suicide bombers were killed in the powerful blast that happened at 11.15am. Intelligence agents chased the assailants and wanted to catch them alive.

But when the assailants tried to escape, NDS operatives fired at them, killing one and wounding another, the spy agency said in a statement. The men wanted to conduct attacks in Spin Boldak and Kandahar City, it added.

"The wounded attacker blew himself up when our agents got closer to him. One official was killed and three others were wounded along with several civilians," the statement said.

The provincial border police commander, Brig. Gen. Raziq, said that six policemen were among the injured. The bomber blew himself up after realising that security officials were chasing him.

With suicide bombings increasing in Afghanistan, hundreds of people have been killed and wounded in Kandahar, Khost, Nangarhar and Kunduz provinces over the past three weeks.
