PUL-I-ALAM (PANinfo-icon): Militants attacked a police patrol searching for bombs planted beneath culverts in central Logar province early on Friday, injuring one police officer, an official said.

The attack that took place in Khadar area, two kilometres south of Pul-i-Alam, the provincial capital, resulted in a firefight, an official at the crime investigation branch, Col. Ziaullah, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

But another security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said one police official was killed and two others were wounded in the incident.

The police were looking for mines under culverts when they were attacked by the insurgents, he said.

A Pul-i-Alam resident, Ghazi, said that a group of rebels assaulted a police vehicle, killing and wounding three security personnel.

The Talibaninfo-icon claimed killing three policemen in the assault. Their spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid also said the fighters entered a face-to-face engagement with foreign troops near the Charkh bazaar on Thursday night.

Mujahid claimed three American soldiers and two of their Afghan guards were killed as a result of the overnight clash. Two fighters were also killed, he added.

The governor's spokesman, Din Mohammad Darwaish, confirmed the clash in Charkh, but avoided commenting on casualties.
