Karzai-nominated senators take oath

Karzai-nominated senators take oath

Feb 26, 2011 - 17:33

KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): Thirty-four members of the upper house, nominated by President Hamid Karzai, took the oath on Saturday, when the Senate began a new constitutional tenure.

Vice President Mohammad Karim Khalili administered the oath to the new senators, who vowed to uphold the state constitution, serve the nation and rise above personal interests.

Khalil urged the incoming Meshrano Jirgainfo-icon members to make efforts at brining peace and stability to their country, torn by decades of war.

Earlier, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Mohammad Humayun introduced the senators to the 102-seat house, whose tenure is divided into three parts.

Of the members, 34 represent district councils for three years; another 34 represent provincial councils for four years and as many are named by the president for five years.
