NATO-led forces arrest 8 rebels in Herat
The militants were arrested during a three-day operation in Zabul area of Shindand district, Lt. Col. Igor Piani told Pajhwok Afghan News.
A senior Taliban commander, named Mullah Bashir, was among the detainees, he said, adding one of ISAF armoured vehicles hit a roadside bomb on its way to Herat City on Friday night. The vehicle was damaged and one soldier slightly injured.
However, a Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousaf Ahmadi claimed five Italian soldiers were killed in the bomb attack. But international forces denied the claim as baseless.
Italy has about 3,300 soldiers in Afghanistan, most of them stationed in Herat. Thirty-six Italian soldiers have so far lost their lives in Afghanistan since 2002.
