Vote recount begins in Nuristan
JALALABAD (PAN): An official delegation from Kabul on Saturday started a vote recount, following allegations of fraud in last year's parliamentary election, in eastern Nuristan province, the governor said.
Led by Mohammad Musa Madani, the delegation arrived a day earlier in Paroon, the provincial capital, Jamaluddin Badr, told Pajhwok Afghan News over the telephone.
The team launched an investigation into the allegations of rigging in the Sept. 18 ballot, Badr said, hoping the process would be transparent and help real public representatives find their way to the parliament.
Unable to say when the process would be completed, Madani explained they were recounting the ballot boxes that were earlier sealed by a judicial team.
Mohammad Munawar Nizami, speaking on behalf of losing candidates, said the recount would protect the rights of Nuristanis, who braved militant threats in going to the polls.
