Toll from Faryab blast goes up
A day earlier, two spectators were killed and 25 others injured when a suicide bomber detonated his explosives during the popular sport event in Shirin Tagab district.
A joint team of Afghan and foreign soldiers had been to the area, where they ascertained the toll, said the ISAF Provincial Reconstruction Team. Some of the wounded civilians were taken to a local hospital and others to an ISAF health facility.
Police spokesman, Lt. Sayed Massoud Yaqubi, confirmed the information.
As usual, Taliban fighters asserted responsibility for the attack, saying eight government officials, including some provincial council members, were killed and 15 others wounded.
A Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, told Pajhwok Afghan News that Faryab Provincial Council members -- Hashim and Gul Mohammad Palawan -- had been killed in the explosion.
