Kabul governor resigns in protest

KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): Kabul Governor Zabihullah Mujaddedi resigned on Monday, accusing the government of ignoring his reconstructioninfo-icon programmes for the province.

"I no longer want to work as a figurehead," Mujaddedi told Pajhwok Afghan News, a day after he sent his resignation letter to President Hamid Karzai.

"Even though the president initially rejected my resignation, he accepted it later on," said Mujaddedi, who stayed in the post for 21 months.  He will work for another 21 days until the end of the Afghan year.

Mujaddedi said his suggestions for the reconstruction of Kabul province were not supported by the Presidential Palace and the Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG).

Without elaborating on the projects, the outgoing governor said: "I had no option but to quit such a symbolic post."
