UN welcomes election of Wolesi Jirga speaker
Almost a month after its inauguration, the 249-member assembly elected the public representative of Uzbek descent from Kunduz province with a majority vote on Sunday.
Of the 173 lawmakers present during the session, 129 raised their green cards in favour of Ibrahimi, who replaces Yunus Qanuni.
"UNAMA looks forward to a constructive relationship with the elected leadership of the Parliament. This step helps pave the way for the Wolesi Jirga to move forward with its important functions," the mission said in a statement.
It said the legislature had an important role to play as one of the branches of the state in working towards a more stable and secure future for all Afghans.
