UN welcomes election of Wolesi Jirga speaker

Feb 28, 2011 - 14:55

KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): The United Nations and the international community welcomed on Monday the election of Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi as speaker of the Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon, or lower house of Parliament.

Almost a month after its inauguration, the 249-member assembly elected the public representative of Uzbek descent from Kunduz province with a majority vote on Sunday.

Of the 173 lawmakers present during the session, 129 raised their green cards in favour of Ibrahimi, who replaces Yunus Qanuni.

"UNAMA looks forward to a constructive relationship with the elected leadership of the Parliament. This step helps pave the way for the Wolesi Jirga to move forward with its important functions," the mission said in a statement.

It said the legislature had an important role to play as one of the branches of the state in working towards a more stable and secure future for all Afghans.
