High Peace Council invites Muslim scholars
The scholars' decision would help resolve the Afghan problem, Burhanuddin Rabbani, told a joint meeting of Afghan Ulema Council and the High Peace Council.
He called upon fighters to shun violence and join the ongoing reconciliation process. "Peace in the country is in everyone's interest and together we can solve our problems."
The former president urged rebel groups to enter negotiations with the government instead of meeting foreigners in the United Kingdom and other countries. However, he would not provide details.
If the armed opposition and the government reached a peace agreement, foreigners would leave Afghanistan, one of the Taliban's major demands, he added.
Rabbani brushed aside concerns that peace parleys with the fighters would lead to closure of girls' schools and the country would return to Taliban rule.
