Karzai wants world to strengthen Afghan forces

KABULinfo-icon(PANinfo-icon): President Hamid Karzai asked the international community and Britain on Tuesday to continue to help strengthen and equip Afghan security forces and bringing about peace in the country.

The president made these remarks on the second day of his visit to London at a meeting with several UK cabinet members, included Defence Secretary Liam Fox, Parliamentary Under SecretaryofStateforForeign Affairs Alistair Burt.

International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchells, Chief of Defence Staff David Richard, UK’s Ambassador to Afghanistaninfo-icon William Patey and the Department of International Development (DFAID) chief were also present.

The Presidential Palace in Kabul said achievements of the High Peace Councilinfo-icon and transition of security responsibility to Afghan forces by 2014 were among the issues discussed.

"President Karzai also referred to his government's progress in the fight against terrorism and narcotics, as well as the challenges it faced in eliminating the twin menace," the palace said in a statement.

Karzai asked the international community, particularly NATOinfo-icon states, to help strengthen Afghan forces before the transition process was completed, the statement added.
