Wolesi Jirga fails to elect 1st deputy speaker
As 217 of the 249 members were present during the session, a candidate needed 109 votes to win. Neither candidate managed to gain the necessary 50 percent plus 1votes.
Nadir Khan Katawazai from Paktika got 103 votes while Abdul Ahad Afzali from Badakhshan received 84. Fourteen ballots were invalid and 16 were blank.
New candidates would stand for the election on Wednesday.
According to the 87th article of the Afghan Constitution: “Each of the two houses of the National Assembly, at the commencement of their work period, shall elect one member as president for the term of the legislature, and two members as first and second deputies and two members as secretary and assistant secretary for a period of one year.”
