Wolesi Jirga's deputy secretary elected

Mar 01, 2011 - 13:39

KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): The Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon, lower house of Parliament, elected its deputy secretary on Tuesday when candidates for the post of first deputy speaker failed to win the required number of votes.

A representative from northern Balkh province, Farhad Azimi, won 117 votes to be elected as deputy secretary, defeating Humaira Ayubi from western Farah province.

As 227 of the 249 members were present during the session, a candidate needed 114 votes to win.

Meanwhile, both runners for the first deputy speaker post failed to gain more than 50 percent of votes in the second round. Nadir Khan Katawazai from Paktika got 105 votes and Abdul Ahad Afzali from Badakhshan 95. Thirteen ballots were found invalid and 12 blank.

Speaker Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi said a third round of election would be held between Katawazai and Afzali later on Tuesday.
