20 athletes join ministry's boxing teams
High school students qualified for the membership based on their performance during trials that lasted two days, sports department head at the ministry, Mohammad Akbar Omarkhel, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Up to 80 students from 20 high schools of Kabul took part in the contests, he said, adding the picks included 10 athletes as members of the youngster team and as many of the youth squad.
Sayed Jawad, 19, one of the selected players, called the competition a significant event to encourage students participate in extracurricular activities. He urged more such events in future, asking the government to build gymnasiums in schools to involve students in healthy activities.
The boxing federation provided technical support for the competitions held under aegis of the education ministry's sports department as part of efforts to promote different games at school level, the department head said.
The ministry planned to hold boxing competitions among students in provinces as well, Omarkhel said.
