KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): A basketball tournament, the first in Afghanistaninfo-icon's capital, got under way at the Olympic Committee Gymnasium in Kabul on Thursday, an official said.

Eight teams from the capital and four provinces, which have been placed in two groups, are taking part in the event, the Basketball Federation chief said.

Abdul Saboor Azizi told Pajhwok Afghan News the four-day competition, aimed at popularising the sportinfo-icon, featured clubs from Nangarhar, Nangarhar, Logar, Herat and Kabul.

Abdullah, a player from Kandahar's Ahmad Shah Baba School Club, blamed the government for paying no attention to promoting the game.

"We've no basketball court or gymnasium for practice and holding competitions. In the harsh winter, we play in school playgrounds," the 21-year-old cager complained.
