First-ever TB lab inaugurated in Herat
HERATCITY (PAN): The first-ever tuberculoses laboratory, which has capacity to diagnose patients from five provinces, has been constructed in Herat, the governor said on Thursday.
Patients of the five provinces -- Herat, Nimroz, Badghis, Farah and Ghor -- would no longer need to go abroad for tests and treatment of the disease, Daud Saba told the inaugural ceremony.
The project for Herat zonal hospital took three years to complete at a cost of one million US dollars, provided by the government of Italy.
Hospital Director Dr Saeed Naeem Alami said though there were small TB diagnostic centres in Herat, patients were often referred to Pakistan for check-ups.
According to public health ministry's statistics, the number of TB patients in the western zone is lower than in other parts of the country.
