Five in the run for 1st deputy speaker slot

KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): Five members of parliament would run for the first deputy speaker on Saturday after two candidates failed for a third time to win the required number of votes.

Gul Pacha Majidi from Paktia and Abdul Rahman Rahmani from Balkh are the main runners for the slot, an official told Pajhwok Afghan New on condition of anonymity. The two are busy canvassing MPs.

However, Majidi said that Khalid Pashtuninfo-icon, Fawzia Kofi and Mohammad Rafiq Shaheer also intended to contest the parliamentary office. "Friends and colleagues had asked me to run for the first deputy speaker," he said.

According to the relevant rules, two people could run for three times for the deputy speaker. If they fail to win the required 50+1votes in the three rounds, new contenders enter the race.

Majidi believed the first deputy speaker's election would be as problematic as the speaker's. "The government and the opposition will support their own certain candidates and use blank votes. This can delay the outcome."

Farhad Azimi Naib, deputy secretary of the house, told Pajhwok they had not received any application from anyone for the slot. However, he said the house would debate first deputy speaker's election on Saturday.
