Taliban-designated district chief killed

Mar 05, 2011 - 16:28

KUNDUZ CITY (PANinfo-icon): A Talibaninfo-icon-designated district chief was killed during an operation in northern Kunduz province, officials said on Saturday.

The rebel chief for Imaminfo-icon Sahib district, Baz Mohammad, was killed on Friday night as a result of a joint operation by afghan and international forces.

Another Taliban member, Qari Abdul Hai, was also killed during the operation, deputy police chief, Col. Abdul Rahman Aqtash, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

They had urged militants several times to give up the insurgency and join the peace process, Aqtash said, warning operations would continue as long as violence persisted in the area.

The overnight offensive was conducted in Shur Tang area, said the district chief, Mohammad Ayub Haqyar. Foreign troops launched the operation without informing local officials, he added.
