Afghan squad off to Wellington for ITF championships
The five-day event, featuring 50 teams, would get under way on March 9 in New Zealand's capital of Wellington, the Afghanistan Taekwondo Federation chief said.
The Afghanistan squad is comprised of Zabihullah (63 kilogram weight category), Saifullah (48kg), Basir Ahmad Habibi (58kg) and Ahmad Ibrahimi (70kg), Shoaib Rahmani told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Last year, the International Taekwondo Federation accepted New Zealand's bid to host the championships, which will inject up to $4 million into the local economy, according to the Wellington City Council.
In the 2009 championships hosted by Argentina, two Afghan athletes had taken part, but none could win any medal, Rahmani said, adding the players were better prepared this time around.
