New district created in Laghman
MAHTERLAM (PAN): A new district was created on Sunday in eastern Laghman province, in a move to improve the security situation.
With a presidential decree, Badpakh has temporarily been given the district's status, Governor Mohammad Iqbal Azizi told a press conference in Mahtarlam.
He said President Hamid Karzai approved on Saturday creation of the additional district, located 75 kilometres west of Mahtarlam.
Badpakh, Garoch, Andror, Shahgilyan, Miakhel and Mir Alikhel areas were far away from the provincial capital and people had numerous problems to come to Mahtarlam to solve their problems, he said.
With regard to security, he said that Badpakh was the area from where insurgents launched attacks on the Kabul-Jalalabad highway, in Kapisa province and Sarobi district of Kabul.
He hoped establishment of the new district would help improve the security situation and speed up the reconstruction effort. A district chief would be appointed and a 200-member police force deployed to the town next week, he said.
Colonel Walker, commander of the American Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) in the province, told reporters they would carry out development projects in the district. However, he said the main priority was security.
