Vote recount begins in Kabul

Vote recount begins in Kabul

Mar 06, 2011 - 19:26

KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): A vote recount got under way in Kabul province after allegations of fraud in last year's parliamentary election, an official said on Sunday.

Cases of fraud would also be investigated, Siddiqullah Haqiq, chief of the special election court, told Pajhwok Afghan News in an exclusive interview.

He said that investigation of fraud cases and vote recount were taking place in 16 provinces of the country. "In coming days, the process will be initiated in other provinces as well."

Over the past two weeks back, the vote recount has been completed in Kunar province only. On Saturday, the process started in southern Kandahar province.

Also on Saturday, some of the failed candidates told a press conference in Kabul that the recount might lead to unseating some of the current MPs.

However, Haqiq refused to say anything in this regard.
