Expediency seen behind speaker, board elections
The board includes speaker of the house, two deputy speakers, a secretary and a deputy secretary. Almost after a month and a half since its inauguration, the lower house completed the process on Sunday.
"Even the assembly's speaker was elected as a result of a political deal," Waheed Muzhda, a political analyst said. He believed the new board would be unable to discharge its duties in an effective manner.
Another political commentator, Mahmoud Saiqal, said that amending internal rules of the jirga would have been better than resorting to ethnic and political deals.
Saiqal said he did not support the way Speaker Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi was elected. "Once again, we used expediency to sort out our problems," he added. However, he hoped that the new board would be able to carry out its task efficiently.
