Salang pass blocked again to traffic

Salang pass blocked again to traffic

Mar 07, 2011 - 10:47

CHARIKARinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): The Salang highway which connects Kabulinfo-icon with the northern provinces is completely blocked to traffic due to snowfall and fierce storms, officials said on Monday.

There was heavy snow, storms and avalanches on Sunday night both on the northern and southern side of the 2,673-metre-long, Soviet built Salang tunnel, maintenance officer, Gen. Rajab, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

The department had started to clear the pass with 65 vehicles and would allow cars to pass when their safety was completely ensured, he added.

He said there could be more avalanches on Monday.

Naimullah, head of traffic in Jabal Saraj district, said the highway had been completely blocked since midnight on Sunday.

More than 100 cars and trucks were stranded in the Tajikan area of Jabal Saraj district, he said.

In winter, there is always heavy snowfall in Salang. The most severe accident happened on Feb. 8, last year, in southern Salang, when 170 people died and 125 were injured due to heavy snowstorms and avalanches which trapped many of them in their cars.
