Obama, Australian PM discuss Afghanistan

Obama, Australian PM discuss Afghanistan

Mar 08, 2011 - 13:10

WASHINGTON (PANinfo-icon):  Afghanistaninfo-icon was high on the agenda at a meeting between Barack Obama, the US president and his Australian counterpart, Prime Minister Julia Gillard, at the White House.

The two leaders discussed the realties on the ground and the scheduled drawdown of US troops, expected to start in July and end in 2014. “We've had the opportunity to talk about the fight in Afghanistan,” Gillard told reporters at joint press conference.

“It is hard, but it is something that I am very personally committed to, to seeing the mission done and to ensuring we play our part in training the Afghan National Army and bringing security to Afghanistan so that the Afghan people can lead their own security,” Gillard said.

In his remarks, Obama did not make any reference to Afghanistan. He concentrated mostly on Libya and the US relationship with Australia.
