Two insurgents killed in Farah operation

Two insurgents killed in Farah operation

Mar 08, 2011 - 16:01

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (PANinfo-icon): Two Talibaninfo-icon militants were killed during an operation in Pakhtunkot district of western Faryab province, the International Security Assistance Force said on Tuesday.

Several areas, including Ghar Tepa, Mangdarakht and Atta Khan villages, were cleared of insurgents during the two-day offensive, codenamed Ittefaq (Unity).

Late on Monday night, NATOinfo-icon-led servicemembers came under rocket attack in Hezar Khan Tepa area, the Norwegian Provincial Reconstructioninfo-icon Team (PRTinfo-icon) said in a statement.

The soldiers escaped unhurt in the rocket strike. Two rebels were killed and several others wounded in retaliatory fire from the soldiers, the statement added.

Lt. Syed Masood Yaqubi, a provincial police spokesman, said Afghan security forces -- backed by ISAFinfo-icon troops -- were conducting the operation. The offensive would have a positive impact on the security situation in Pakhtunkot, he hoped.
