Mar 09, 2011 - 15:13

SAR-I-PUL (PANinfo-icon): Three policemen have disappeared in the northern province of Sar-i-Pul, officials said on Wednesday, while the Talibaninfo-icon claimed that a police commander and his 10 policemen had jointed the insurgents.

The three policemen had disappeared on Tuesday from a checkpoint in Seyad district, provincial police chief, Brig. Gen. Asadullah Sherzad, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

The three had defected from the militants about a month ago and were recruited as local police, Sherzad, said.

A tribal elder said the three men had gone back to the Taliban Tuesday night in Nawabad Khwajagan area of Syad district. A new group of police had replaced them at the checkpoint, Mir Alam, said

Meanwhile, Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, said a commander, called Badli, had joined the insurgents, along with 10 men and weapons.

They had brought with them a machinegun, eight Kalashnikovs, a walki talki, three motorcycles and some ammunition, he said.
