Drugs and weapons seized in Nimroz
ZARANJ (PAN): Weapons, ammunition and drugs were seized during a police raid, while 10 ready-to-fire rockets were defused in the southwestern province of Nimroz, officials said on Wednesday.
The munitions included two machine guns with 440 cartridges, 17 rocket launchers, 53 hand grenades with three cans of fuses, five boxes of machine gun bullets, two Kalashnikovs with 1,000 cartridges, two rocket shells and a pistol. They were seized on Tuesday during a joint operation by police and border police in Khwabgah, on the outskirts of Zaranj city, provincial police chief, Abdul Jabar Purdali, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
A man was detained in connection with the weapons which had been stored in a ruined house, he said.
Eight-and-half kilograms of heroin, hashish and opium also were recovered by police during the operation, he said.
The ammunition and weapons were kept in the area to be used by militants, he said.
Meanwhile, 10 ready-to-fire rockets were recovered from Jangal area of Kang district and were defused, the district chief, Mohammad Juma Elmi, said.
Militants had planned to fire the rockets at the district headquarters, but police discovered the weapons and defused them, he said.
