KANDAHAR CITY (PANinfo-icon): US defence secretary, Robert Gates, visited Arghandab district of southern Kandahar province to discuss the recruitment of civil order police, officials said on Wednesday.

Gates discussed the strengthening of the police and some other issues during his trip on Tuesday, the governor's spokesman, Zalmay Ayubi, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Gates said US assistance for the strategic province is long-term and would focus on security, good governance and development.

Gates visited civil order police in Tabin village of Arghandab district and said the police had a crucial role in maintaining security.

US troops trained 130 civil order police and the process is continuing, Arghandab district chief, Shah Mohammad, said.

The civil order police were given jobs after a period of training and receiving equipment he said.

According to Kandahar officials, civil order police would be trained and deployed in Panjwaee, Khakrez, Maroof and Shah Wali Kot districts of the province.
