HERAT CITY (PANinfo-icon): Three insurgents and two security officials were killed during an ongoing operation in Pashtuninfo-icon Zarghoon district of western Herat province on Thursday, an official said.

The joint Afghan army and police operation was launched on Wednesday in four villages of the district, Col. Najibullah Najibi, spokesman for the 207th Zafar Military Corps, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Najibi said a policeman and an army soldier were killed while two other security officials were injured. Four rebels were wounded and as many caught alive.

A statement from the Herat Police Headquarters said 40 weapons and a rocket launcher were discovered during the operation, which was carried at locals' request.

But a Talibaninfo-icon spokesman, Qari Yusuf Ahmadi, said six policemen were killed and three others injured, a claim rejected by security officials.

In southern Kandahar province, Taliban fighters cut off ears of four people working on reconstructioninfo-icon projects.

The incident happened at a camp for internally-displaced people in Zherai district, said Niaz Mohammad Sarhadi, the district chief.

He added that eight individuals, who were traveling in an auto rickshaw, were intercepted by the Taliban. After chopping off the ears of four, the rest were freed. The fighters also torched the three-wheeler, he said.
