Police kill, arrest insurgents in Herat
HERAT CITY (PAN): One insurgent was killed and another three arrested during an operation to clear militants from an area in western Herat province, officials said on Thursday.
Police carried out the operation in Pashtun Zarghon district on Wednesday, the west zone police spokesman, Col. Abdul Rauf told Pajhwok Afghan News. One insurgent was killed and another three arrested, he said.
The operation is still continuing, he said, adding, a policeman was also injured.
Former district chief of Pashtun Zarghon, Abdul Latif Harooni, said the operation covered Mir Abad village of the district.
The operation was launched after people demanded their area be cleared of militants.
However, Taliban spokesman, Qari Yusuf Ahmadi, claimed six policemen were killed three other officials, including the counternarcotics head of Pashtun Zarghon district, were injured.
The security officials denied the claims.
Ahmadi said two of their fighters were killed.
Meanwhile, a suspected burglar was killed by police on the Herat-Shindand highway on Wednesday as he tried to steal money and mobile phones from the passengers of a bus, Rauf said.
Another burglar was arrested, he said.
