Policemen arrested with 430 kg of opium

Mar 12, 2011 - 16:00

ZARANJ (PANinfo-icon): Three Afghan policemen, including an officer, were arrested for carrying 413 kilograms of opium in a police pickup in southwestern Nimroz province, officials said on Saturday.

Three Kalashnikovs and 950,000 Iranian tomans (40,000 afghanis) were also recovered from their vehicle, a border police official, Col. Ghulam Haidar, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

A police commander, Maj. Ali Ahmad, confirmed the vehicle belonged to the provincial police headquarters. The detainees were being investigated, he said.

The detainees had confessed to smuggling the opium from Zaranj to Kaang district in exchange for 100 afghanis per kilogram, Ahmad said.

Separately, 337 kg of opium was seized in Khashrod district during an operation on Friday, said the Nimroz police chief, Brig. Gen. Abdul Jabbar Purdali. No one was arrested.
