2 killed as police, militants clash in Balkh
MAZAR-I-SHARIF/KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): A policeman and a militant were killed in a gun battle in northern Balkh province on Sunday, an official said.
The clash broke out when a group of insurgents ambushed a police vehicular convoy patrolling in Qala Razzaq area of Chamtal district in the afternoon, police spokesman, Shir Jan Durrani, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
The firefight left one Taliban fighter dead and another injured while a police officer was killed, he said.
The incident came a day after Taliban attacked a joint Afghan-ISAF forces convoy in the same district. A fighter and a policeman were injured in that attack.
Elsewhere, intelligence officials arrested seven suspected insurgents in southern Kandahar province, an official said on Sunday.
National Directorate of Security deputy director in Kandahar, Abdul Wahab Saleh, said the detainees had confessed to their crimes including planning suicide attacks, blasts and target killings in the province.
