Pakistan launches new survey on Afghan refugees

Pakistan launches new survey on Afghan refugees

Mar 13, 2011 - 12:18

KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): Pakistaninfo-icon and the United Nations have launched a fresh survey to collect detailed data about Afghan refugees in the neighbouring country, a media report said on Sunday.

The survey has initially been launched in six districts of the country, Quetta, Karachi, Peshawar, Rawalpindi, Nowshera and Gujranwala, the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) news agency reported.

Being conducted by the Ministry of States and Frontier Regions and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the survey would entail the refugees' family status, including numbers of special people and school-going children.

Dunya Aslam Khan, a UNHCR representative, told APP that the survey would also yield information about the refugees who run businesses in Pakistan. The process is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2012.

The number of registered Afghans had gone up to 1.9 million with the birth of 250,000 babies, she said. At the moment, Pakistan has 80 refugee camps, 10 in Balochistan and 70 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
