KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): President Hamid Karzai and the US embassy in Kabul on Monday denounced a suicide blast that killed 35 people inside an Afghan army recruitment centre in the northern province of Kunduz.

Another 40 people were injured when the suicide bomber blew himself up near Spin Zar area in the 1st police district of Kunduz City, the provincial capital.

A statement issued from Karzai's office said people who wanted to join Afghan forces to serve their country were targeted in the "vicious" attack. The dead included four children.

"It is an unpardonable act by Afghanistaninfo-icon's enemies who don't want to see Afghan forces strengthened," Karzai was quoted as saying in the statement. He said such cowardly attacks would not deter the youth courage from joining security forces.

Meanwhile, the United States embassy also condemned the assault as "vicious". A statement from the embassy said: "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims of these horrible tragedies. We salute the bravery and sacrifice of the Afghans who volunteer to serve and protect their fellow Afghans.

The United States promised it would continue to work in partnership with Afghanistan to fight "terrorist enemies" and ensure greater peace, security and stability for all Afghans.
