Security upped in Balkh for Nawroz celebration
MAZAR-I-SHARIF (PAN): Stringent security arrangements have been put in place to celebrate new year's festivities, beginning on March 21, in Mazar-i-Sharif, the capital of northern Balkh province, an official said on Monday.
Thousands of people and government officials from across Balkh and other provinces flock to Mazar-i-Sharif every year to celebrate Jashn-i-Nawroz or New Year celebration.
Security for this year's festivities, including a flag-hoisting ceremony at the mausoleum of Hazrat Ali, would be jointly maintained by Afghan and foreign forces, the 203rd Pamir Zone police commander, Gen. Mohammad Daud, told reporters.
He said 5,000 security personnel would be deputed at sensitive places around the city to keep security. Seventeen security posts on roads leading to the city would be established as part of the plan, he added.
He said areas where militant activities were feared had been identified and arrangements put in place to deal with any untoward situation.
New security posts were being established on the Mazar-Kabul and Mazar-Shiberghan highways, the general said, urging people participating in the festivities to cooperate with police in maintaining security.
