25 prisoners freed from Takhar jail
KUNDUZ CITY (PAN): Twenty-five inmates, including a woman, were freed from Takhar central jail on Tuesday in compliance with a presidential decree, an official said.
On Feb. 15, the birthday of Prophet Mohammad, President Hamid Karzai issued a decree, granting relief to prisoners across the country, head of the attorney general’s office in Takhar, Wazir Mohammad Jalali, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Twenty-four men and a woman with her child, who had between one-and-a-half to two years left of their prison terms, were released, he said.
They were imprisoned on charges of smuggling, robbery and other crimes, he said.
Gul Rahman, who was convicted of stealing three sheep and sentenced to three years in jail, was released after passing 10 months in prison.
"I will not commit another crime and will earn my money the legal way," he said.
There are more than, 300 prisoners, including 18 women, in the prison, the prosecutor said.
