KHOST CITY (PANinfo-icon): The High Peace Councilinfo-icon chief on Wednesday said efforts were in place to secure the release of Afghan prisoners held at Bagram jail and Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

Prof. Burhanuddin Rabbani, visiting southeastern Khost province, told a gathering of tribal elders that the high peace council had launched its efforts at releasing Afghan prisoners from jails run by foreign forces. However, he did not provide further details.

Rabbani asked Khost residents to cooperate with the council in bringing peace to the country. "We visit Khost to tell people that it is the time to work together for peace," he said.

Mohammad Amin Wiqad, a member of the council, in his address on the occasion urged a tribal elder from Zadran tribe to convince Jalaluddin Haqqani, who is a Zadran, to join the peace process. Haqqani is a strong terrorist network operating in border areas between Afghanistaninfo-icon and Pakistaninfo-icon.

Wiqad also accused Pakistan of not cooperating with Afghanistan to bring peace and stability to the region.

A tribal elder from Sabari district, Mir Zaman Sabari, said people of Khost were supportive of efforts at peace initiated by the peace council. However, he said peace could not be achieved in the country until unauthorized operations by foreign troops were stopped.

"From one side, Talibaninfo-icon kill us on spy charges and Afghan and NATOinfo-icon forces by spontaneous operations, on the other," he lamented.
