PUL-I-KHUMRI (PAN): A tree plantation drive was launched in the northern province of Baghlan on Thursday, officials said.
Up to 7,000 samplings are being planted as part of the campaign, an agricultural official said. He said most of the saplings belonging to the department's nurseries were being sown.
Provincial environment protection department head, Shah Nawaz Shahpur, welcomed the drive, calling it a positive step toward keeping the environment clean and preventing air pollution.
However, he said seedlings should not be neglected after their plantation. Trees planted during previous campaigns had dried due to lack of attention from the authorities concerned, he said.
In the past, the province had forest spreading over 38 hectare of land, but 70 percent of it was cut down by powerful individuals, Shahpur said.
