17 militants killed in Kunar operation
ASADABAD (PAN): Seventeen militants have been killed in a recently concluded operation by US forces in the eastern province of Kunar, a US military commander on Sunday.
Lasting four days, the operation was carried out in Lahusain village of Shegal district, Lt. Col. Joelb. Vowell, the NATO-led US forces commander in the province, told a press conference.
He said 17 fighters were killed and four others were injured. The wounded fighters were being treated at a health facility of the troops, he added. "We are confident that all those killed in the operation are fighters, who were involved in attacks on Afghan and international forces," he said. Civilians and the international soldiers suffered no casualties, he said.
But a resident of the village, Hazrat Jan, said 10 locals, including a student of seventh grade, were killed in the operation. Foreign troops would kill people coming out of their houses, he said.
A public representative from the district in the provincial council, Ismael, said it was not immediately known whether the dead included civilians.
