UNSC extends UNAMA mandate by one year
In a strong show of solidarity, all the 15-members of the powerful body of the UN voted in favour of the UNAMA extension as the resolution noted that the mission has an important role to play in the transition process, which was formally announced by President Hamid Karzai.
In its 12 page resolution, the Security Council called for strengthening the process of regional economic co-operation including measures to facilitate regional trade, to increase foreign investments and to develop infrastructure, noting the country’s historic role as a land bridge in Asia.
The resolution stresses the importance of a comprehensive approach in addressing the challenges in Afghanistan, and stressed on the need to further improve the reach, quality and quantity of humanitarian aid.
Reiterating the concerns about the security situation in Afghanistan, in particular the ongoing violent and terrorist activities by the Taliban and Al Qaeda, the UN Security Council expressed its alarm over the threats posed by these terrorist outfits.
Earlier this week, the UN Security Council held an extensive debate on the current situation in Afghanistan said that the transition process can only be made sustainable if accompanied by an inclusive political process.
