5 militants killed in Kunar operation
ASADABAD (PAN): Five militants were killed during a joint operation by Afghan and international forces in the eastern province of Kunar, officials said on Wednesday.
The joint operation by Afghan troops and the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) was launched on Tuesday after militants attacked a military convoy in Bar Kunar district, the alliance said in a statement.
Several militants were killed in the operation, the statement said without giving exact figures.
The operation was launched in Dab Baroro area of Asmar district, provincial police chief, Brig. Gen. Khalilullah Ziaee, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Some militants were killed in a retaliatory air strike by NATO-led international forces, he said.
The media office of ISAF in the eastern zone said that five militants were killed.
Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, claimed they had attacked a convoy of foreign forces in Ghaziabad district, destroyed two military vehicles and killed four soldiers.
