ISAF arrests 3 suspects in Samangan

AIBAK (PANinfo-icon): NATOinfo-icon-led forces arrested three gunmen in northern Samangan province, officials said on Thursday. However, ISAFinfo-icon said the detainees were members of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan.

The suspects were arrested in Charma Choqur village of Darah Sof Payien district on Wednesday night, Samangan police chief, Abdul Razaq Elkhani, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Elkhani said he could not confirm if the detained men had links to militants or not.

A Kalashnikov, one pistol and a shotgun were recovered from the detainees, he said.

A resident of the area, on condition of anonymity, said foreign forces arrested four men, including a Talibaninfo-icon member.

Abdullah, the acting district chief of Darah Sof Payien, said a helicopter of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) landed and that soldiers had arrested three people who were running away.

ISAF headquarters in Kabulinfo-icon said a commander of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan was arrested during an operation in Darah Sof Payien district.

According to the statement, the suspect was involved in attacking civilians and making bombs for the militants.

It did not mention the name of the suspect.

ISAF soldiers also arrested other suspects and recovered weapons during the operation, it said.
