Kandahar police HQ being relocated
KANDAHARCITY (PAN): Police headquarters in Kandahar city, the capital of southern Kandahar province, is being relocated following a deadly militant attack on the facility almost a month back, an official said on Thursday.
Militants laced with AK-47s and suicide vests attacked the police headquarters from a nearby building a month ago. Several policemen and civilians were killed and wounded in that attack.
"To avoid civilian casualties, the current building housing the police headquarters is being shifted to another building belonging to border police east of Kandahar city," the police chief, Brig. Gen. Khan Mohammad Mujahid, told a press conference.
Some sections, including passport and crime branch, had already been shifted to the new building, he said.
The main entrance to the headquaters had been sealed in order to ensure a smooth flow of traffic on the road, he said.
Mujahid said the shifting was a temporary arrangement until land for the construction of a new building was identified.
