Eikenberry pledges long-term US commitment

Eikenberry pledges long-term US commitment

Mar 26, 2011 - 20:11

HERAT CITY (PANinfo-icon): The US ambassador to Afghanistaninfo-icon, Karl Eikenberry, has said his country's commitment toward a better security in Afghanistan will last long and stay unchanged.

"The US and the international community will continue to cooperate with Afghan police and army even after 2014, when the process of security transition will complete, Eikenberry said during a visit to Shorabak district of southern Helmand province.

He said Afghan forces were getting stronger day by day and they would work together with Afghan people to make the forces even further stronger.

The ambassador said the US would not repeat its mistake of 1990s, when Afghan fighters known as Mujahiddin expelled Soviet forces. Analysts say the US forgot Afghanistan afterwards.

"We will not repeat that mistake," the US envoy said.
