Militants abduct police among 50 people in Kunar
The incident took place on Saturday evening when the police were traveling from Nuristan province to Kunar in Tarnik area of Chapa Dara district, provincial police chief, Brig. Gen. Khalilullah Ziaee, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
The detainees were traveling from Want Waigal district of Nuristan to Kunar when they encountered Taliban fighters on the way, a resident of the district, Nasrullah, said.
In a dramatic turn of events, the police, after successfully disarming the Taliban fighters, handed over their weapons back to them after breaking a truce. But later, the police themselves were ambushed and detained, when they were outnumbered by more Taliban fighters, he said.
Taliban divided the 50 detainees into small groups and kept them at various undisclosed locations, he added.
Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, claimed responsibility for detaining the policemen. ‘We targeted the police on Saturday in Kandai area of the district after chasing them from Want Waigal district of Nuristan’, he said.
The Taliban targets and detains many policemen on the way, and release them only after they assure that they will not work with the police in future, he said.
The Taliban Shura in Eastern zone would take a decision about the detainees, he said.
